Frank Barnett-Jones TSR-2 Phoenix or Folly

About the Book:

This book attempts to describe the aircraft, its systems and intended roles. At the same time it also traces the origins of the Operational Requirements and tries to piece together for the first time the controversial issues and personalities that conspired together to bring about the tragic downfall of the TRS-2.

“In the late 1950s the Government of the day embarked on a major initiative which was to change forever the basic structure of Britain; s Aviation Industry. At the same time the Royal Air Force had an urgent requirement for a new strike aircraft. From this emerged one of the most far-reaching military aviation programmes ever embarked upon by a British Government up to that time. The subsequent arguments and debates for and against were voiced in all sections of the media, attracting both public attention and condemnation. The new industry emerged from the ashes of the old as the Brish Aircraft Corporation and the Hawker Siddeley Group, however , the project that was formulated as the very incentive in bringing about the change was firstly condemned, and then literally scrapped by a new incoming government. It was always indicated that the project was cancelled because of its cost, but has this been used merely to disguise an underlying alternative reason?

Back Story and Biography.

“Frank Bsrnett-Jones was born in 1944 and took a keen interest in aviation from an early age. He joined the local Air training Corps squadron and soon acquired a basic knowledge of aviation technology, going on to attain his glider pilots licence. Towards the end of the 1960s he took up powered flying and qualified as a private pilot on single engine light aircraft. His early working life was spent as a representative in the motor industry, but in 1972 he changed his allegiance and joined Britain’s largest aero-engine manufacturer, working in their extensive computer complex, specialising in telecommunications and teleprocessing. Frank first saw the TSR-2 when he visited the Cranfield Institute in Bedfordshire in 1973. Since then he has pursued his subject, becoming involved in the restoration of this same aircraft upon its re-location to the Imperial War Museum at Duxford. In 1987 he began researching for an article that was to appear in Flypast. THis article explored the circumstances surrounding the disposal of TSR-2 after the project was cancelled in 1965. Hs research and positive responses to this article indicated that he had only scraped the tip of the TSR-2 iceberg… hence this book.  ”
