SKU: SKURMPW1969

Roger Mortimer and Peter Willett Great Racehorses of the World

About the Book:  This is a fascinating book for anyone, racing expert or not, who is thrilled by a good and gallant horse. It is fully illustrated from contemporary paintings, prints and photographs. A good copy of a highly collectable racehorse book. Notes from flyleaf “ Two of racing’s most distinguished writers Roger Mortimer of the Sunday Times and Peter Willet of The Sporting Chronicle and Horse and Hound, have combined to write the stories of some of the greatest horses in world horse racing; such horses known far beyond the confines of their own countries as Ribot and Nearco (Italy), Ballymoss (Ireland) Man ‘O’ War and Native Dancer (United States), Carbine and Phar Lap (Australia), Se bird (France) Kincsem (Hungary) and of course heroes of the English Tuft like Pretty Polly and Hyperion. There are jumpers too: the mighty Arkle, of course, and Golden Miller, winner of five consecutive Cheltenham Gold Cups.”

Back Story and Biography.

“Controversy is liable to surround any selection of well-known horses classified under a particular heading., since inevitably widely differing views exist as to their qualifications for inclusion. The authors of this book do not claim that their selection embraces all the greatest horses in the world racing history; the do consider that all the horses they have chosen have valid claims to greatness in one respect or another, this distinction is implied in the title, for they have refrained deliberately from calling the book “The Greatest Racehorses of the World”. The horses included were chosen because they possess qualities which made them of special interest to the authors; it is hoped that they will prove of equal interest to the readers.”
