Helaine Shand Mealtimes at the Mill

About the Book:

“ A super cookbook with a collection of unique recipes from South Africa such as Sousboontjies, Potjie and Cape Brandy Pudding. Recipes and anecdotes by Helaine Shand.

“The idea of writing this book came as a result of the many requests for recipes from guests, family and friends alike. I am sure that the simplicity and basic approach which we have towards the preparation to food will surprise them all. There are no magical secrets, and it is with pleasure that I share these Old Mill Lodge recipes, finely tuned to suit this time and this place. The ‘professionals’ have advised me against sharing recipes, but I am not a professional and agree with Richard Olney the author of ‘The French Menu Cookbook’ when he says ‘a recipe executed by two individuals, in each of whom may reside a finely developed tactile sense, will produce, thanks to individual sensibilities, two different dishes, each of which may be flawless.”

Back Story

In 1989 Peter and Helain Shand heard that ‘The Mill’ as it is colloquially called was for sale and as it reminded them of the time, they had spent running an inn of a similar name in Ireland they thought they would have a look at the place. They decided there and then to buy it. So the Shands started their new life on McGregor assisted by daughters Nina and Kate, then still both university students, who helped out during the holidays. Since then, The mill has gone from strength to strength, with visitors form all over the world enjoying typical country hospitality and fine food.   The charming village of McGregor lies at the foot of the Riviersonderend mountains, 20 km from Robertson on a good tarred road.
