LUXOR and its Temples - Aylward Manley Blackman First edition 1923

About the Book: - A RARE find especially a First Edition in Dust Jacket.

Alwayd Manley Blackman writes in the preface: ”It was as long ago as December 1913 when Major Fletcher was staying with me in my camp at Meir, in Asynt province, that he and I first discussed the possibility of bringing out together a popularly written account of life as led by the inhabitants of ancient Thebes, I supplying he text and he the illustrations. Upon the outbreak of the great War any idea we entertained of such an undertaking was inevitably given up. However, the interest aroused by the late Lord Carnarvon and Mr Howard Carter’s discovery in the Valley of the Tombs and the Kings brought the old project back to our minds; and when Major Fletcher was approached by Messrs A. and C. Black on the subject of producing a book about Luxor, to which he was to supply the illustrations, he at once wrote to me asking me to do what I had often talked about doing with him in the past. Hence this book, which is hoped will convince its readers that Egyptology is not a dreary study, but is full of human interest-is, in fact, concerned rather with life and beauty than with mummies and other dusty trophies of death. To Professor Sir W. M. Flinders Petrie and other friends I tender my sincere thanks for kindly permitting me to use illustrations from their published works. In conclusion, let me say that it will give me no little satisfaction if this small volume, so admirably illustrated by Major Flecther’s pencil drawings, succeeds as it is intended to so, in increasing the interest of the general public in Ancient Egypt, and to the Egypt Exploration Society, under the auspices of which a great part of my research work in Egypt has been conducted.”

Back Story and Biography.

“Aylward Manley Blackman, FBA (30 January 1883 – 9 March 1956)[1] was a British Egyptologist, who excavated various sites in Egypt and Nubia, notably Buhen and Meir. Having taught at Worcester College, Oxford, he was Brunner Professor of Egyptology at the University of Liverpool from 1934 to 1948. He was additionally a special lecturer at the University of Manchester, and was involved in or led a number of excavations with the Egypt Exploration Society. Blackman was born in Dawlish, Devon, the eldest son of Rev. James Henry Blackman and Mary Anne Blackman (née Jacob) He was educated at home and his interest in archaeology was inspired by his father, a keen amateur archaeologist who created archaeological digs by burying home-made 'tablets' for his children to discover. Aylward's oldest sister, Winifred Susan Blackman, (1872–1950), also became an Egyptologist. He joined St Paul's School at the age of sixteen and gained a scholarship to study at Queen's College, Oxford. At Oxford, Blackman was a pupil of Francis Llewellyn Griffith, and graduated with a First Class degree in Oriental Studies in 1906. Blackman was appointed the Oxford Nubian Research Fellow and assisted Griffith in his excavation of Farras. From 1934 to 1948, he was the Brunner Professor of Egyptology at the University of Liverpool. He died in 1956 in Abergele. Courtesy of Wikipedia
