Ulster Snapshot by Neville Hughes  - Signed by the author

About the Book:

Notes on Flyleaf: “This novel is set in Northern Ireland in winter 1978. It depicts seven days in the life of an army patrol, keeping surveillance on a suspected terrorist from an observation post in the roof of an empty terrace house. The story focuses on the physical and mental pressures to which the four men in the patrol are subjected. The hero if the tale is the young NCO in charge of the patrol, who leads his men through many dangers and uncertainties despite having to endure hardship and severe pain. His difficulties are compounded by the discovery that his comrade and second in command has had an affair with his wife left behind in Germany. Personal friction between the men is the cramped observation post is matched by the tension of an increasing pace of events outside. A series of apparently disconnected actions by local inhabitants is intriguingly pieced together by the patrol until a shotting climax is reached. The characters and locations described in the book are fictious, but the situation and setting authentic reflections of the authors’ own experiences, and the events are typical of the time.”

Back Story

. This is a novel; fiction being less strange than fact. The setting is Northern Ireland in 1978: The situation portrayed is authentic enough an illustrative of the way things were them. Yet those who believe they might recognize the new town of ‘Craighall’ will know that Dunreagh Park estate does not exist, not do the inhabitants of the imaginary Medway Road bear any resemblance otto any identifiable characters living or dead. They, like the others in the story, are portraits of many. But the events related are not too dissimilar from actual occurrences, and the scenario is typical of the realties anywhere in Ulster in those dark days. In sum, the tale is a synthesis of a few impressions recorded from personal memory nearly three years afterwards. More than the year have now elapsed, and the ever-changing security situation has moved on to such an extent that my descriptions of military tactics as they might have been in 1978 can in no way offend. I have not spared the reader from our heroes’ frequent profanities. To them they are simply a means of emphasis, and to exclude them from the narrative would detract from realism. The most enduring impressions, however, remain the quality and conduct of the soldiers involved. It is to such men as these, who suffered the indignities of a strange remarkable fortitude, self-discipline, patience and nerve, that this book is dedicated. Perhaps one day the full truth of their exploits can be made public. It deserves to be, for the nation should be proud of them.
