Notes from flyleaf “The title of this book indicates its nature. It deals with aspects of our life in town and country which seem peculiarly English. English country houses for instance, have a history and character unique in the world, and Miss Sackville-West writes of them with a mixture of appreciation and humour. Some are magnificent, some are fantastic - all are historical in some way or another. English cities and small towns are described with lively penetration sand discerning bias by John Betjemna and our ports and harbours-both English and Scottish- are critically appraised by Leo Walmsley. Mr Thomas Burke gives the quality and atmosphere of our English gardens. Finally, Edmund Blunden, who also contributes the Introduction, describes our English villages – perhaps of all ‘aspects’ the one most loved of Englishmen, most appreciated and envied of foreigners.”
