The Natural History of Quackery by Eric Jameson 1961

SKU: SKUEJ1961

The Natural History of Quackery by Eric Jameson - a very rare Uncorrected Proof Copy.

About the Book:  RARE and Fascinating book.  Jameson writes “This is not a moral book. Many of the characters in it are defiantly immoral. Others are almost gentlemen. Neither is the story of Quackery for the excessively squeamish. Quacks, to be successful, desperately need a popular appeal. What appeals to one age may seem crude to another. They also have no time for respectability or convention and some of the most active fields of Quack practice are to be found in subjects sometimes taboo to general society.”

Back Story

A well-digested history of this irregular order of medical practitioners would not be uninstructive. It would present to us a curious list of priests and nobles, philosophers, simpletons and knaves. Even royalty itself would not be absent from it. It is nearly one hundred years since Sir Benjamin Collins Brodie wrote these words and its seems incredible that nobody has yet attempted a History of Quackery. In this book I have not tried to comment on the vast army of Continental Quacks but have limited myself mainly to English speaking brethren with one or two notable exceptions. Whenever possible I have quoted from original sources. Spelling has always seemed to me to be a difficult subject. For this reason, I have taken  the liberty of  modernising this wherever it seemed feasible.”
