Field First Aid Guide

About the Book:   This book shows you how to best avoid and (if necessary) treat those stings, bites and punctures from marine life encounters of the worst kind. Most guides don’t even come close to this kind of comprehensive , international coverage. Here you will find Concise descriptions of hazardous marine species and their range. Colour photos for easy identification. A convenient listing by both common and scientific names The most up-to-date first aid information.

You will learn about the sea creatures that may appear harmless but are capable of wounding, posing, or even killing the unlucky diver. Remember, however that marine animals are generally harmless unless they are deliberately or accidentally threatened or disturbed. Most injuries are the result of a chance encounter (swimming into a jellyfish) or a defensive manoeuvre (stingray wound) and are rarely due to an aggressive action by the animal. Research in the management of human injuries from marine animals is still in its infancy, with scare funding available. The treatments for many types of marine Envenomations are largely based on experience and anecdotal reference. Most of the treatments in use have supporters and detractors who engage in heated debate concerning efficacy. The authors recommend a conservative course of action in first aid treatments that is deigned to eases the victims; pain, but, at the same time, will not complicate later diagnosis and treatment of the injury by a physician. Much remains to be done to discover effective and reliable treatments based on sound medical research for many types of marine envenomations.”

Back Story and Biography.

“This book is the result of ten years effort that has had many starts and stops along the way. Only through encouragement and assistance has this project come to fruition.  Every attempt to keep the scientific information and photographic identifications of the species profiled in this book as accurate as possible. This was difficult for some species where life history, habitat and geographical range information was also complicated, particularly for some of the Indo-Pacific animals, where species characteristics were highly variable.”
